Blindness is a film about a city that is ravaged by an epidemic of instant "white blindness". Those afflicted are quarantined by the authorities in an abandoned mental hospital where the newly created society of the blind quickly breaks down. Among the quarantined are an ophthalmologist and his reluctant healthy wife who has not lost her sight but stays with him to help.
This title sequence was inspired by both the story of the film and the experience of an eye exam. The names of the cast go from blurry to clear to represent the difference between the blind ophthalmologist and his unaffected wife, while the names coming together and pulling apart represent the troubles faced by the society of the blind.
